Background of CJCU UPF
2018 CJCU Partner University President Forum
Background
Chang Jung Christian University will hold the CJCU Partner University President Forum titled “University Social Responsibility” on October 28-31, 2018 to enhance the national quality of universities and promote international competitiveness.
The backgrounds of the Forum are given by two projects: “University Social Responsibility (USR) Project” by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan, and the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP)’s call for 17 sustainable development goals.
To help the universities engage their future development in practicing social responsibility, the Ministry of Education in Taiwan piloted the “USR Project” in 2017, focusing on connecting with the local communities and cultivating the talents. In the following Higher Education Sprout Project (HESP), launched by Taiwan's Ministry of Education in 2018 with NT$ 86.85 billion (equivalent to approximately $ 2.9 billion) investment, universities are stressed as a social innovation facilitator and a nexus of regional industry-academia partnership, and encouraged to take on their social responsibility on the aspects of local caring, and industrial and cultural innovation through teachers and students’ communal involvement within the local development.
In the international trend, the IAUP in October of 2016, called an action that pushes universities in the world to integrate 17 sustainable development goals and global civic awareness into their teaching, research and institutional development strategies. The 17 sustainable development goals are based on the issues on poverty, well-being, sustainable society, gender, ecology, peace, and justice. They emphasize the importance of the strategic cooperation among the universities in the world to recreate the community, to revitalize cultures, and to create the value of the land. In the era of globalization, higher education should not only develop its academic system, but also cultivate more ethical and responsible global citizens.
In line with the above developmental trend of higher education, CJCU will invite domestic and foreign university presidents and high school principals to participate in and jointly discuss how to practice University Social Responsibility.
