Mission

Foreign languages have played an important role in the globalized world, and it has also made its impact on the overall mission of language education in Taiwan. Accordingly, CJCU emphasizes on improving students’ foreign language abilities, and the objective of the Language Education Center is to provide an extensive range of foreign language classes that enable students to improve their command of at least one foreign language in the overall learning process. As a result, expanded linguistic skills are expected to facilitate students’ abilities further, which may reward their future careers. The Language Education Center of CJCU also provides courses in traditional Mandarin and Taiwanese cultures in order to promote international cooperation and cross-cultural understanding among students.

Curriculum Features

The objectives of the Language Education Center is to provide courses in Mandarin, English and other foreign languages to facilitate international cultural exchanges, and to create an international environment on campus to encourage students’ motivation to use foreign languages for cross-cultural communication.

Our Center offers (required or elective) language-related courses, including Freshman English, Sophomore English and other advance language courses for students above sophomore level. In addition, our Center also provides culture-oriented Chinese courses (at elementary, intermediate, higher intermediate and advanced levels) for international faculty or students.

Worth noting that from 2018 academic year onward, Sophomore English will replace the original content of English for General Purpose, with Basic English for Specific Purpose (BESP). Categorized into four areas—arts and humanities, business and management, medicine and nursing, as well as engineering and technology, BESP contains a total of 10 different subjects (5 for each semester), and students may choose at least one course for each semester based on their academic or personal field of interest. The objectives of this course are to increase students’ knowledge of language and cultures, and to engage students in critical thinking.

The Center organizes various activities (such as summer camp, the Philippine Night, and free talks), and contests (such as PPT presentation contest or demonstration, readers theater competition, self-introduction, recitation, speech competitions, or Mandarin singing contest). It is hoped that students are motivated to practice the use of various languages on various occasions and opportunities provided. We also offer tutorial, consultation and supplementary remedial courses to help students pass various language proficiency tests, or to enhance their competitiveness in the globalized job market.

Language Labs

The Language Education Center has three Audio-Visual Labs, located on the fourth floor of the First Teaching Building. Labs are designed to accommodate between 50 and 60 students, and are equipped with TVs, VCRs, tape recorders, and CD/DVD players. Besides the labs, the language learning instruction system SANAKO has been installed and it is used to facilitate both teaching and learning in the language lab.

Labs are also used as self-learning areas. Students are encouraged to conduct their self-learning via various learning software in the labs.
