Introduction
In the trend of aging population, the need for the professionals of long-term care and health care keeps increasing. Department of Social Work in Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) points out that in Taiwan, the ratio of social workers to people served is 1:1693, which is far lower than that in neighboring countries such as Japan and Hong Kong. With the enforcement of long-term care policy and the trend of aging society, the bodies, minds, spirits and social health of the elder and the disabled have been emphasized. The purposes of the program are to construct better functions for study and learning and the concept of social participation in long-term care; to conform to the national development in Comprehensive Health Care System and Long-term Care Plan 2.0 of MOHW; to cultivate the professionals in the two fields of social work and health care based on the goals of practicing long-term care and enhancing folk welfare.
To match up with the upcoming practice of long-term care service and insurance of our nation, the program aims at nurturing the long-term care professionals with such key knowledge of medical sociology and health care as institutional management and policy planning based on four principles of teaching, testing, training and practicing. Furthermore, students can choose suitable medical institutions and health care centers for their internship place. They are required to have internship of over 400 hours for the social worker certificate and health care practice of 40 hours.
Medical Sociology and Health Care Bachelor’s degree program is associated with the government policy of nurturing long-term care professionals and focuses on the demand from health care industries and long-term care service institutions which are certified by MOHW and local government.
