A Summer Chapter of Culture and Nature: Insights from the 2024 Miyakojima Cross-Border Summer Camp
This summer, the Chinese Language Center of Chang Jung Christian University (CJCU) partnered with Japan's Miyakojima to create a unique learning and exploration experience for Taiwanese and Japanese students—the "2024 Miyakojima Cross-Border Summer Camp." As the morning sun of August 21 cast its light on the beaches of Miyakojima, 28 students from CJCU and 5 partner universities in Japan gathered to embark on an 11-day cultural exploration.
Act One: Bridges of Language, Weaving of Cultures
The first week of the camp was filled with the interplay of languages and cultures. In the Mandarin and Japanese classes, students acted as language partners for each other, breaking down language barriers through laughter and communication. On the opening day, a forum with the Miyakojima City Government marked the beginning of this cultural journey. Students gained deep insights into this eco island's development plans and governance through in-depth discussions with local officials.
At the same time, interactive activities, such as Mandarin learning, English exchange, and hand-made clay Shisa with local primary and middle school students further enriched the cultural exchange between Taiwanese and Japanese students. These interactions quickly blossomed into friendships, weaving together the diverse cultural backgrounds of the participants.
Act Two: Delving into Cultural Fabric, Embracing Nature's Embrace
As the camp entered its second week, the students moved beyond the classroom, exploring every corner of Miyakojima. They learned to play the traditional "Sanshin" instrument, enjoyed folk dances, and made Miyakojima local cuisine, fully immersing themselves in the unique charm of the island's culture.
However, this cultural exploration was not limited to history and tradition. The rich natural environment of Miyakojima also became a key subject for the students. During the marine exploration and beach cleaning activities, they explored the beauty of the marine ecosystem and personally experienced the urgency and importance of environmental protection. These activities not only deepened their understanding of nature but also sparked a sense of responsibility toward environmental conservation.
Act Three: A Graduation That Marks the Beginning of Growth
On August 29, the camp concluded with a final presentation, where students proudly showcased the knowledge and skills they had acquired during their journey. They also shared their observations and experiences with the local community. This graduation ceremony was not just a recognition of their hard work but also a tribute to their cross-cultural learning journey.
Reflecting on these 11 days, students expressed that the camp had provided them with much more than knowledge and skills. It had also given them the opportunity to form lasting friendships with peers from different cultural backgrounds and to reexamine their relationship with the world through close contact with nature.
The 2024 Miyakojima Cross-Border Summer Camp was not just a journey; it was a profound experience that transcended culture, language, and nature, writing a unique chapter in the lives of all participants. All participants think their courage and confidence have been increased by the camp activities. The CJCU Chinese Language Center looks forward to continuing such programs in the future, offering more students the opportunity to expand their horizons and gain valuable experiences that will be cherished for a lifetime.
