Tracing the Origin of Zhuxi, Good traces passed down from generation to generation—2024 Memorial Service for Pastor Barclay and other Missionaries
[Reported by Office of the Chaplain]
CJCU held the "Tracing the Origin of Zhuxi, Good traces Passing down from generation to gerneration" event on October 5. President Yung-Lung Lee, Vice President Huey-Min Sun and many teachers led students to ride bicycles to trace the Zhuxi Basin, and held a ceremony for Pastor Barclay and others at the Christian Cemetery and did memorial service for those missionaries.
October 5th is the anniversary of the death of Pastor Barclay. Every year, the Office of the Chaplain cooperated with the Barclay Memorial Park Sustainability Management Association to hold a memorial service for Pastor Barclay and other missionaries. This year, in response to the 400th anniversary of the founding of Tainan, we have specially planned to trace the origin of the city by bicycle to trace the Zhuxi (bamboo creek) and understand the changes in the geography and hydrology of the stream and the changes in historical cultural relics. Through commemorating missionaries, we can also learn about the contributions of our ancestors to this land and its people.
The activity started from Dream Lake in Barclay Park, one of the sources of Bamboo Creek. Students from the International College of Practice and Education for the Environment introduced the water quality testing work of Dream Lake, and then rode bicycles along the Zhuxi through the streets and alleys. Along the way, Miss Mi Chong, a professional guide from the Wilderness Association, introduced the history, geography and hydrological changes. At the Zhuxi water purification site, the site team leader introduced the water purification work and showed that after water control and water purification, the banks of Zhuxi have become a new urban water-friendly recreational space, showing a new look of the waterfront landscape.
Afterwards, the cycling team entered the Tainan City Christian Cemetery to hold a memorial service and laid flowers in front of the graves of Pastor Barclay and seven other missionaries to thank them for their sacrifice and devotion to the land and people of Taiwan. We also hope that we can continue their love for Taiwan and continue to serve this land and people.
In the afternoon, the president Lee led everyone in Barclay Memorial Park to paint the park's entrance imagery installation to respond to today's message with service actions. The entire activity traces the culture of Zhuxi through cycling and commemorates the missionaries' wonderful contributions to Taiwan. It is hoped that the participating teachers and students can better understand the story of this city, inspire care for the hometown, and pass on the emotions and actions of loving the hometown and protecting the native land.
