2023.11.17 International Student Introducing Hydroenergy to Elementary Students
Abel, an IPSD student and also one of the English part-time teachers at Datan Elementary School, specifically with the eager minds of the 5th grade. It was truly heartwarming to see their enthusiasm and curiosity, especially about renewable energy - and today's focus was on hydroenergy!
After delving into the basics of how hydro energy works, I brought out a small model to show them in action. Their eyes lit up with understanding and amazement. This model was more than just a teaching tool; it was a bridge connecting young minds to the vast potential of clean energy.
2023.11.07 Food and Agriculture Education Project─ DIY Making Cassava Powder
NanYanXin Farm PIC, Mr. Guo was invited as a guest speaker on the "Experience Learning" Course. He led IPSD international students to experience washing and producing cassava powder. Unlike the methods in African countries where cassava is eaten raw or soaked and dried in the sun to make powder, in Taiwan, cassava is cut into pieces, mixed with water to form a paste, and then kneaded in a cloth bag for 5 minutes to wash out the cassava starch. After letting it stand for ten hours to remove excess water, the cassava powder is then sun-dried to completion. Finally, the international students got to taste Taiwan's national beverage: pearl milk tea, and learned that pearls are made from cassava powder!
2023.10.21 Water Assessment in Barclay Memorial Park
CJCU Dean of ICPEE, Prof. Horng led students from the "Environmental Sampling and Analysis" course to conduct water quality monitoring at Dream Lake in Barclay Memorial Park. Accompanied by experienced park guides, students are able to gain a deeper understanding of the park, especially from the garbage park to the natural wilderness park before testing water quality.
Through the University Social Responsibility (USR) program, bringing students into the field for practical experience brings about a wealth of learning and challenges. The students also learned about Dream Lake's water quality testing techniques, contributing to local development and enhancing public awareness of environmental concerns.
2023.10.17 Food and Agriculture Education Project─Making Biochar
IPSD "Experience Learning" course instructor, Ms. Gan, who is also the CEO of the USR Green Dawulun Community Office, led IPSD international students to the office for biochar production. Mr. Liu, the head of the grassroots awareness studio, was invited to guide the students on converting agricultural waste from the community into biochar using the TULD tank. The produced biochar is then applied to the soil to improve the soil and increase soil aeration.
